Meanderings of an Amateur Linguist

Just me and my languages – a dangerous combonation

My Languages

Native Language: It’s English. I’m from the USA what do you expect? I speak more or less General American English.

I speak ASL (American Sign Language) fluently. It was the first language I really “took” to. I’ve been learning it for a few years now, and actively using it every chance I can. I’d love to get a webcam and do some ASL Vlogging, but I don’t see that in the near future.😛

I speak Italian at an advanced level. I can hold down a conversation and stray onto many unusual topics like linguistics or pop culture and I can still hold my own. I just don’t have that accent down!

I’m able to speak intermediate Volapük, Japanese, and Esperanto. The funny thing is that I have always sworn I would never be one of those anime fans that learn Japanese, and I’d never learn a constructed language. Here I am with two constructed languages, and Japansese. I don’t seem to do so well with these “linguistic promises.”

I also speak German at a basic level. I’m working on my German all the time, so hopefully we’ll see an increase in my comprehension skills in the near future.

As for what language I’m learning at the moment? It varies from day to day. But don’t worry, I’ll be keeping up a language wish-list.🙂

  1. Yeah, most people who like anime so much that they have to learn Japanese annoy me. I don’t know why. I’m sure you’re not one of those people though =).

Guess what – one of the things that annoyed me the most when I was studying Japanese was that I was not studying it because of anime or manga, and yet some people just seemed to assume I was!😦 But then, being the only Western-looking guy in class didn’t probably help much… I did end up attracted to anime and manga, but because of Japanese, and not the other way round.

I’d like to learn Japanese, and I don’t like anime.😛
